Speech Delivered For The Technical Assistance Center For The Development Of Rural And Urban Poor

The three greatest religions in the world have their common roots in the Middle East.
One of the leading figures in all these religions is recognized by each in some capacity of esteem.

Jesus the Christ:

-   Is the Christian Redeemer;
-   Jesu is one of Islam’s prominent prophets; and
-   Jesus is also a Jewish prophet and claimed by the Jews, by birth, to be their own

Two of these world’s religions have been transplanted to the Philippines, primarily in Mindanao – centuries ago – one by historical accident, the other by intent – but both imbued with missionary passions and belief in one omnipotent being.

Today, centuries later, we in Mindanao is in a state of non-peace and non-war, participated in by the descendants of those passionate ancestors.

This is, by no means, not a religious quarrel we are undergoing – although some are exacerbating the conflicts by fanning the purported source – our diversity – our differentness.

But only the ignorant and the evil-hearted cannot appreciate that this very diversity can also be the strength of a people – provided, the reasonable among us recognizes that we are indeed one people.

This forum is a necessary continuing exercise to reconcile this rich diversity through our common stated theme today:  Understanding the Religious and Cultural Diversity of Mindanao by Highlighting Common and Shared Moral Values, Ethical Standards, Leadership and God Governance.

The tri-people of Mindanao (Lumad, Muslim, Christian) whose leadership, advocates and believers are represented here have its task clearly delineated for you; a dialogue that must expose yourself to each other and bare your souls so that these commonalities will surface.
This is not a walk in the park. There are bound to be misunderstanding, irritants and apprehensions. But no one said that there is an easy road to peace or reconciliation. In fact these are the necessary ingredients for an eventual successful endeavor.
